Loft Extension - Central London
This is a residential project where was asked to add an additional floor to a one level two bedroom, two bathroom apartment. The idea was to add a master suite, to include the master bedroom, en suite, living space and balcony area with a dome shaped roof, in order to increase head height.
Ideal to be constructed out of light gauge steel frame; weight and access issues being a consideration.
Despite being a fairly straightforward project it has been made trickier due to its proximity to the train line with one section of the scaffold erected and dismantled when the train lines could be turned off at 1am!
Initially the scaffold was put along one whole flank wall (careful not to block the light from an artist studio downstairs). A tower was then put up with all the necessary protection for the train lines by the exterior glass walkway due to be fully revamped. This allowed for a temporary roof to be installed.
Everything that was being retained inside was fully protected. The whole roof was then removed allowing the light gauge steel frame to be erected as per drawings and illustrated in the pictures. This was clad in 3 layers of 6mm ply cross bonded with P.V.A. glue so that we could make a dome shape. The roof was then fully insulated before laying a new zinc roof.
All internal walls were fully insulated and the fit out includes a new tiled bathroom, staircase and double glazed composite windows.
